On March 20th and 21st Sandown Racecourse was the site of the PATS show to the pet industry trade. This picturesque venue is located in the town of Esher, about 20 miles southwest of central London. PATS 2012, UK’s biggest pet trade show, is only in the fourth year since its inception in 2009. In that short time the number of show visitors has doubled. Attendance in 2012 was 13.5% higher than in 2011 and the number of visitors from outside the UK from as far away as Australia and Hong Kong showed a 22% increase.
As a first-time exhibitor and US company, CANIDAE attracted many visitors to their booth. Frank Hon, Director of Operations, Manny Rosillo, Global Sales Manager, and Barbara Rosillo, Global Sales Assistant, explained the benefits of CANIDAE’s super premium foods. Health-conscious pet owners and retailers asked detailed questions about how CANIDAE formulas, especially our grain free pureElements and pureSea, provide the best quality nutrition for their pets.
PATS was an excellent opportunity for CANIDAE to gain exposure of our brand among the general public. CANIDAE was sought out at the show by a major UK distributor and talks are promising that CANIDAE will be marketed in this territory very soon.
Many of our West Coast Sales Managers traveled with the Amgen Tour of California for 2011 in order to raise funds for cancer research in pets. Becki Grable, Jim Dempsey, Kim Trudelle, and Andy Faessler shared in staffing the CANIDAE booth at each Tour of California Lifestyle Festival, selling raffle tickets and promoting Responsible Pet Ownership to the huge crowds of bicycle enthusiasts.
Lee Villarreal of San Jose, California was the lucky winner of the charity raffle, taking home two Felt beach cruisers. Villarreal, a dedicated bicycle racing fan, is father to three children and owner of a happy and healthy Chihuahua named Pickles who is fed CANIDAE All Life Stages.
Villarreal has been riding one of his new beach cruisers to work everyday where he is employed as a purchasing technician.
CANIDAE donated the Felt beach cruisers to the raffle ensuring that all of the proceeds would be available for the AKC Canine Health Foundation and their fight against cancer in pets.

CANIDAE sponsored Surf Dog Ricochet, the SURFice dog who lives a lifestyle of pawing it forward while raising funds and awareness for human and animal causes, and our own Diane Matsuura’s yellow lab Hailey competed in the 2010 Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon held September 12th in Del Mar, California.
This year’s Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon drew a crowd over over 4,000 spectators who came to cheer for doggie surfers and their owners in addition to helping raise money for animal adoptions and educational programs.
The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon is a fun event that raises funds for orphaned animals at the Helen Woodward Animal Center located in Rancho Sante Fe, California. Owners and their pets participated in 20 minute heats based on the dog’s weight class. They were judged on their ability to ride the waves, have fun and stay on their boards. There were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each weight class and the first place winners moved on to the finals. This event helped raise awareness and money for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership.
CANIDAE Pet Foods announced today that its new EQUIDAE® line of steam extruded horse feed has begun shipping to retail pet and feed stores. EQUIDAE horse feed is designed to provide horses of all classes and age groups with cool, consistent calories derived from only high quality ingredients. The EQUIDAE line of horse feed is guaranteed and marketed exclusively by CANIDAE, a trusted brand since 1996.
“The response to our initial rollout of EQUIDAE from distributors and retailers has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Mike DeNunzio of the CANIDAE Small and Large Animal Division. “Many of our partners in retail have been looking for a higher quality equine diet to offer their customers that reduces the amount of undigested grains entering the hindgut. They recognize that EQUIDAE is designed to reduce this excessive fermentation taking place in the hindgut thereby decreasing gas and heat production. This makes the horse healthier and more comfortable.”
EQUIDAE horse feed is available in two formulations, EQUIDAE Alfalfa Plus and EQUIDAE Coastal Plus, both of which are designed to provide optimum levels of energy for the maintenance and long term health of all horses. EQUIDAE Coastal Plus is alfalfa free. Unlike textured feeds, both EQUIDAE formulations are produced using the extrusion process.
This advanced steam extrusion processing, together with the highest quality ingredients, provides cool, consistent calories to the horse which is crucial for optimal gastrointestinal health. Extrusion expands the volume of the feed which in turn increases the nutrient availability providing a readily available source of energy while slowing down the eating process to reduce the risk of over-consumption. Dust is also reduced by the extrusion process, and the shelf life of the feed is increased. Although extruded feeds take longer to manufacture than other types of feed, they provide the ultimate in nutritional quality.
Horse owners can safely achieve any daily caloric requirement by utilizing good quality forage or pasture combined with either EQUIDAE formula. Both formulas have no added sugars or molasses, are highly palatable, contain skin and coat conditioners, and provide a scientifically formulated balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids. Both formulas also feature guaranteed viable microorganisms, antioxidant vitamins, chelated minerals, and electrolytes.

Scout is a 15 year old Chocolate Lab who started feeding CANIDAE All Life Stages dog food when we introduced it over 14 years ago. Debbie Q., a good friend of ours for many years, bought Scout for her son from one of our first employees back when we were getting started in the mid 1990s. We believe he started on his all CANIDAE diet at about 6 months of age making him one of the very first CANIDAE customers!
Debbie’s son Duncan is Scout’s owner and told us Scout was his 8th grade graduation present. “My parents saw a “Labrador Puppies Available” ad with a photo of the litter on the bulletin board at San Dimas Grain Company in San Dimas, California and decided it was time for me to have a dog of my own. When it was time for me to choose, there were so many cute puppies that I had the hardest time picking one. I remember looking over the group of puppies and seeing a small shy puppy among all the other strong energetic puppies. He was getting pushed around and most people would have looked over this shy puppy. I fell in love with him. I don’t know what it was, I just could not leave without him. We named him Windy River Scout after his mother, Marilyn’s Windy City, and his father, Mad River Burt.”
Scout, who is now fed our Platinum formula for seniors, is still doing well in his senior years and is an energetic, happy boy, still loving life. He earned his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen certification many years ago, and attained his Rally Novice title at 11 years of age. “It is amazing how long he has lived and I cherish every memory,” said Duncan.
Competitors from the Czech Republic, Croatia and Slovenia gathered on June 6, 2010, in Maribor for the 2nd Dogfrisbee International Competition. Participants could enter four different disciplines: Freestyle, Dogdartbee, Time Trial and Medley Relay. At the entrance to the event each competitor received a CANIDAE frisbee, towel, sticker and wrist band.
The Medley Relay is a new event, featuring teams consisting of three human-canine pairs. This relay is a combination of minidistance and time trial. The first team to complete two 10-yard, 20-yard and 30-yard throws in the shortest time wins this competition. Judges from the Czech Republic and Slovenia awarded second place honors in this event to the team of CANIDAE’s distributor in Slovenia, Jasna Sen. Jasna and her dog, Grom, earned third place in the time trial competition.

CANIDAE Pet Foods has donated 1,400 pounds of super-premium CANIDAE All Life Stages dog food to help Gentle Giants Rescue in Norco, California continue to save the lives of the giant breed dogs in their care. The donation was arranged by and made possible through our friends at Freekibble.com, a charity based in Bend, Oregon.
Gentle Giants Rescue, now the largest giant breed rescue in the world, was founded 16 years ago by Burt Ward and his wife Tracy to save the lives of primarily large breed dogs. Burt Ward, who portrayed “Robin, the Boy Wonder” in the 1960s television series “Batman,” stated, “Animals, who are so innocent and so loving, and all they want to do is love you and be loved. I want to protect them. I want to help them. Our whole life is now charity and giving back.”
Over 1000 dogs and puppies are rescued each year by Gentle Giants Rescue including Great Danes, Borzoi, Great Pyrenees, Irish Wolfhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands and others. Some of the dogs are rescued from shelters unable to care for them, while others come from private individuals.
Freekibble.com serves the needs of animal shelters across the United States, helping to ensure that shelter dogs and cats receive the quality food they need. CANIDAE Pet Foods is a founding contributor to Freekibble.com, a website and charity started by 14 year old Mimi Ausland whose website allows anyone to donate 10 pieces of kibble to a needy dog or cat simply by answering the daily trivia question posted on their homepage. “We really appreciate and enjoy working with CANIDAE to help feed all these homeless dogs and cats that need our help… we also love being able to help feed Gentle Giants – they do an awesome job!” says Mimi. Freekibble.com launched in April of 2008 and has thus far been able to donate over 420,000 pounds of premium kibble for hungry dogs and cats in shelters.
